Laptop running slow? Do these 5 things before buying a new one

I almost bought a new laptop last year over this. Glad I didn't turned out to be startup apps and a dust-clogged fan, not the hardware. Twenty minutes fixed what I thought needed $900.

Startup programs are the usual suspect

Every app that launches automatically when you turn the laptop on keeps a process running quietly in the background, forever, until you close it or restart. I had eleven things launching on startup and used maybe three of them regularly.

  • Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Startup apps tab disable anything you don't open daily
  • Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items remove anything unfamiliar

Then check how full the drive actually is

Past about 90% full, both Windows and Mac slow down in a way that's hard to miss, because the system loses the breathing room it needs for temporary files. Mine was sitting at 94% full with about six years of random downloads. Clearing out old installers and duplicate photos got it back under 80% and the difference was immediate.

Run a malware scan, even if you think you're careful

Unexplained slowness paired with the fan running even when nothing's open is a pretty reliable sign of something running in the background that shouldn't be. Windows Defender, already built in, is usually enough you don't need to buy anything for this.

The thing that actually got me: my fan was loud constantly, even on the lock screen. Turned out to be a leftover process from an app I'd uninstalled months earlier that never fully cleaned itself up. Task Manager showed it using 60% CPU doing nothing useful.

Open it up and clean the vents

Laptops deliberately slow themselves down to avoid overheating, and a dust-clogged vent makes that kick in way earlier than it should. A $10 can of compressed air on the intake vents made a real, noticeable difference on mine the fan finally calmed down too.

Last check: is it actually just underpowered

Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) while you're doing your normal work and watch memory usage. If it's pinned above 85–90% constantly, that's not a cleanup problem anymore the laptop genuinely doesn't have enough RAM for what you're asking it to do. This is the one case here where new hardware, or more RAM, is the honest answer.

Don't skip to the hardware upgrade

In my case it was steps one and two combined startup apps plus a full drive. I'd guess that covers most people who think their laptop is "just old." Go through all five before spending money.

One extra check I would make

Do not judge the laptop during the first ten minutes after startup. Windows and macOS both do a lot of catch-up work right after booting, especially if the machine has been off for a while.

Quick answers

Why is my laptop suddenly running slow?

A slow laptop is often caused by startup apps, low storage, background updates, malware, overheating, or a browser using too much memory.

Should I buy a new laptop if mine is slow?

Not immediately. Check startup programs, storage, browser tabs, malware scans, and overheating first. Many slow laptops improve after a basic cleanup.

How much free storage should I keep on a laptop?

Try to keep at least 15–20% of the drive free. When storage gets too full, updates, caching, and normal system tasks can slow down badly.
