Apps keep crashing on Android? Try this before reinstalling
Instagram started crashing every time I opened stories, but worked fine for everything else. Didn't need to reinstall it cache clearing sorted it in under two minutes.
Reinstalling feels like the obvious answer but it's actually the last thing I'd try, since you lose any local settings the app had. There's a faster fix that solves it most of the time.
Clear the app's cache first, not its data
This is the one people skip because the menu makes it look scary, but cache and data are different things. Clearing cache just dumps temporary files the app rebuilds automatically you don't lose logins or settings.
Settings → Apps → [app name] → Storage → Clear cache. Open the app again right after. This alone fixed my Instagram problem.
If that doesn't help, then clear data but know what you're losing
One step further is "Clear storage" or "Clear data" on the same screen. This does log you out and reset any in-app settings, so it's a bigger step. But it's still less hassle than a full reinstall, and it solves crashes caused by corrupted local data that a cache clear alone won't touch.
Check if the app actually needs an update
Sounds obvious, but Play Store auto-update can silently fail if you're low on storage. Open the Play Store, search the app, and see if it shows "Update" instead of "Open." I've had this happen more than once without ever getting a notification about it.
Restart the phone actually restart, not just lock it
Locking the screen doesn't clear background processes the same way a real restart does. If multiple apps are acting up at once, not just one, this is worth doing before anything more involved. Takes 30 seconds and rules out a whole category of problems.
Check available storage on your phone
Apps behave unpredictably, including crashing, when the phone itself is nearly out of storage same as the laptop slowdown problem, just on mobile. Settings → Storage will show you. If you're above 90% full, that's worth addressing on its own.
Last resort: reinstall
If you've cleared cache, cleared data, confirmed the app is updated, restarted the phone, and it's still crashing now it's worth uninstalling and reinstalling fresh. By this point it usually means something deeper got corrupted during an install or update.
Order I'd actually do this in
Cache clear, then restart the phone, then check for an app update, then clear data, then reinstall as the very last step. Most crashes I've dealt with personally never made it past step one.
One extra check I would make
If several apps crash at once, treat it like a system issue first. If only one app crashes, stay focused on that app instead of resetting half the phone.
Quick answers
Why do Android apps keep crashing?
Apps usually crash because of a bad cache, outdated app version, Android WebView issue, low storage, or a temporary bug after an update.
Will clearing cache delete my app data?
Clearing cache usually removes temporary files only. Clearing storage or data is different and can remove login sessions or app settings.
Should I reinstall an app that keeps crashing?
Try clearing cache and updating the app first. Reinstalling is useful only if the lighter fixes do not work.
